What do you do when you get stuck?

Or should I say blocked?  Do know what I mean?  When you spend hours staring at a blank page or blank screen waiting for inspiration to hit?  If you've never experienced this, don't tell me, I'll get depressed.

Do you have any techniques to overcome this obstacle?

Me?  I keep away from the computer for a day (okay, maybe three).  I watch some movies, read some, go shopping.  It helps get the vacuum that is my brain filled.  It may be filled with useless junk but it is better than having nothing up there at all.

  1. Hey there fellow YA campaigner! I'm so stuck right now it's not even funny. Well, that's not completely true. I can write anything I want...except chapter seven. I've been trying for weeks and it just won't happen. It. Is. Killing. Me! Such is life. I just keep telling myself that everything will work itself out. Usually I spend lots of time avoiding what I know must be done. I outline the spot I'm stuck at in the vein of one of those choose your own adventure books. Basically I say, "What if this happens." and then I list possible answers. I keep going until I find a path I like. I don't know why I avoid doing it when I know it's what always works for me. Good news is, I think I just figured out what I'll be doing this weekend. LOL. Hope you get unstuck soon. :D

  2. I step away for a day or so and let things simmer in my mind. I also read an article that said to do some free writing. the author said to keep a box full of trinkets next to your desk. Pull one out and write a short story about it. I keep a lot of little "treasures" my kids give me in a basket and try that every once in a while. It might not solve the problem of my WIP, but it does keep me writing about something.

    1. Oh excellent. I have all these little odds and ends in a box - not sure what to do with them. So if you see a story about a purple eggplant named Edgar here, you'll know what you started!

  3. Writers block sucks but I do the same, too. Go out to a park or just hang out with friends to get more inspiration :D

    1. I did just that today. I went to the library and took some photos. Thank you for the tip.

  4. Yeah, I don't want to hear from anyone who hasn't had this problem either. :)

I find that reading helps, or watching TV/movies. Reading/seeing another person's story unfold often helps get the juices flowing.

  5. Oh, I've SO had this before. It sucks. Especially when I get like an hour a week that I can spend on writing, and then I sit there staring. Ugh. Anyhow, I find that music really helps and gets things moving. And freewriting--just getting something, anything, on the page, even if it's nonsense. And, of course, shopping. Because that helps everything!

    1. Ah, music! Forgot that one. Yes. I need to listen to music. Good tip!

  6. I do a number of things. First of all, I remove myself from the situation before I can do any damage to my story. I give myself time away from it, as much time as I need.

During this time apart I like to read, watch TV shows and movies. They help the inspiration process. Once I've had a break, I come back and read through the story. If I need more time away from it then that's fine but if I'm ready to continue to write then I do!

  7. A brisk walk outdoors is the best for me. There's something about inhaling fresh air, feeling the sun against my skin, listening to nature, seeing the sights, that get those creative juices flowing. I usually take a small notepad and pencil shoved in my pocket. 99% of the time, something pops into my head.

We've all be there, at some time or another. :)
