Linger

I finished "Linger", which is the second book in the "Wolves of Mercy Falls" series.  The first was "Shiver".

The book was good.  It is the further adventures of Sam and Grace from the first book, and introduced Cole St. Clair who used to be a rock star before he chose to become a werewolf.  Yeah, he chose the life of a werewolf.  Also, a character named Isabella from the first book becomes a more prominent character in this book.

Anyway, you can always tell when you're reading the middle book of a trilogy.  They always have to have a kind of unsatisfying ending so you'll go out and get the last book in the series.

And this is why I hate reading books in a series while the entire set is not available.  I have to wait until July 2011 for the next one.  Dang... Just like I gotta wait another year for the next Twilight Movie and then a year after that for the final Twilight movie.

Shiver

This is another Young Adult book I read on Kindle.  It was good.  I read it all in one day, which is easy to do if you ignore the laundry, the vacuuming, the groceries, and taking out the trash...

This is about a young girl, Grace who has this affinity for this wolf with yellow/gold eyes.  The wolf gets shot by her friend's father, ends up on her doorstep changed into a human boy.  So then, like all YA books, Sam the wolfboy meets girl, wolfboy and girl fall in love, etc. etc. etc.
Yeah, noticing a theme here...

Anyway, I liked it so much I bought the second book after this called "Linger".  Still reading this one.  Will tell you about it when I'm done.

Graceling

Graceling is another Young Adult book that my sister loaned me.  It is set in a fantasy world but it reminded me of a fairy tale.  Castles and Kings and princes and ladies.  A graceling is someone who has two eyes of different color.  That signifies they have been gifted with a special 'grace'.  In Katsa's case, she has a fighting grace, she is unbeatable.  Her uncle, king Randa sends her out like an enforcer.  People who do wrong by the King get their arms broken or their fingers removed by Katsa.

Anyway, she meets this guy (yeah, it is always about a girl and a guy in these stories) named Po (his actual name is like Greenley Greenbriar, or Greenway or something like that).  He is also a graceling with a fighting grace (or so she thinks).

They have all kinds of adventures and I don't think I'm giving too much away when you know, they fall for each other, etc etc. etc.

Not too original in coming up with a fantastic world, but the story has plot and is well written enough that I had to read it to the end.

PS - you may wonder why I'm reading all these YA books.  I'm not forever stuck in high school.  Okay I am, but my excuse is that I'm trying to write one myself...

Kindle

Kindle was cheaper than ipad so I went ahead and splurged and got myself one.  The result -- a review of the device and three books to review! hurrah!

Okay, so first things first - the device itself.  Lightweight.  Fits in my purse!  Comes up with these nice black and white illustrations of famous writers when the thing is turned off.

It isn't backlit though, so you can't read in the dark without a nightlight or something.

downloading on the whisper net is something else too.  I tried to download two books today.  One no problem, the second one didn't make it onto the device.  Now I have to call Amazon and figure out where the thing went.  Dang it...more work for me...

Ahn Joo Food Truck

It has been a while.  Haven't been doing much except work and PT.  Today I tried the Ahn-Joo Food Truck.  I decided against the usual, normal kalbi type stuff and decided to try "Korean Nachos"
What is Korean Nachos?  It is fried rice cakes (in Japanese it is mochi) covered with some bits of Kalbi and topped with kim chee and some kind of garlicky sauce.    Quite different.  It was surprisingly good but I wasn't ready for the tons of garlic!

I have a rep meeting in an hour.  Mints, I need mints!

The Golden Temple

This is a picture I took of the Golden Temple (Kinkakuji) in Kyoto.  Thought it turned out pretty good for a point-and-shoot camera.

Trip to Mt. Fuji

Several Years Ago we went to Japan and took a bus tour to Hakone.  Hakone is where Mt. Fuji is.  We went all the way up the Mt. but due to the fog, This is all of Mt. Fuji that we saw that day.

Next we went to Owakudani where you can get good views of Mt. Fuji, but again, no success for me.  Owakudani is a crater that was created during the last eruption of Mt. Hakone volcano some 3000 years ago.  Much of the area is still an active volcanic zone wtih sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers.

They are famous for their black eggs.  The eggs are cooked in the natural hot springs and the sulfur in the water turns the shells black.  Your life is supposed to be extended by 7 years for each egg you eat!

Bowling

To foster interdepartment relations, the place I work at had a mandatory bowling event yesterday.  We were all split into teams of six across all departments.  My team was a network buyer, a research person, and IT person, accounting, digital and me.
This team brought their own boombox and did the YMCA dance.
Our team was "Team Strike" so we made strike signs.  My sign said "Justice for Janitors!" but it wasn't very pretty.  We had some dissenters over the team name, as you can tell!
By the end of the event, I learned a lot about my teammates.  Probably more than I should have.  But it was a good event, and the goal was met!
